���Good luck in America��� and began crying. That image
will never leave my head because I can see how I have
impacted these children, and their impact on me has
been even greater.���
The students returned from Africa with a commitment
to continue Latin���s participation in the WE-ACTx
summer camp and have begun their fundraising efforts
for 2011.
A larger group of about 20 Latin students had the
opportunity for life-changing experiences during a trip
to China through the Free the Children program.
For two weeks in June, our students visited schools
that were built by Free the Children, a non-profit
organization that involves young people in the United
States in efforts to help young people overseas. They
also volunteered, teaching English in the classroom,
doing maintenance work and spending time with
children at an orphanage, in addition to visiting some
of China���s well-known landmarks.
Finally, another group went to Italy as part of the
bi-yearly Latin in Rome program. This interdisciplinary
summer program offers students a cultural immersion
experience in which they study modern Italian history
and culture and explore the connections between Italy���s
classical past and current realities
The group started in Rome and the nearby sites of
Ostia and Tivoli, moved on to Florence and spent its
final days in Venice.
As always, Latin���s campus also was bustling with
activity over the summer. A record-breaking 660-plus
children participated in the day camp and summer
programs. Many of them were from Latin and the city
of Chicago, but Latin also hosted visitors here from
China, Korea, Turkey, Italy and other places.
