up front In the Summertime During the summer of 2010, Latin students once again traveled the world to enrich their educational experience, provide service and in some cases transform the way they look at themselves and others. For the first time this year, Latin offered a small group of committed students an opportunity to travel to Rwanda in July and August to work with children living with HIV/AIDS. The students served as counselors at a summer camp that was in part supported through a communitywide fundraising effort at Latin over the 2009-2010 school year. This opportunity grew out of Latin���s longstanding relationship with Dr. Mardge Cohen, who helped found Women���s Equity in Access to Care and Treatment (WE-ACTx) in 2004 to help women and their families who were infected with HIV/AIDS during the Rwandan genocide. WE-ACTx serves more than 3,000 women 12 Latin Magazine and their children with treatment and social support ��� including the summer camp where Latin students worked. During their time in Kigali, our students led camp activities, bonded with their young charges and experienced moments in which they were successful in bringing joy to children who had suffered unimagineable traumas. The Latin group also traveled the country visiting WE-ACTx clinics and some of the landmarks of the genocide, and got to know survivors of this tragic period. ���In two weeks, my perspectives have changed in such a way that I could never have imagined,��� wrote Lizzy Brilliant ���12 of the trip. ���I began by thinking that I was visiting Rwanda to support those who had been through trauma and been infected with HIV.
