class notes John Stern is now fully retired and enjoying it after a lifetime in retail at Stop and Shop and Hillmans grocery stores in Chicago and then the Port Royal and other bookstores in his and wife, Lindas, current hometown Hilton Head, SC. More time to read, play bridge and watch the White Sox, writes John. 1952 Bob Mendelson Our condolences to Robert Berger for the loss of his son, Jeffrey Berger, who attended Latin for several years, in a small plane crash in California on March 16, 2011. Our thoughts are with Jeffs wife and children, and with the entire Berger family. 1954 Robert Stein in 1962. Dr. Marianne McDonald writes: At 74, Im still in the department of Theatre at University of California, San Diego (UCSD), directing dissertations for students and teaching independent courses. I was given two awards this year. The first was the Anthousa award from the Greek society in San Diego for advancing Greek studies; the second was from VOW, Voices of Women, for advancing womens studies in my classes and promoting strong images of women in my plays. This fall Ive been teaching at the Osher Institute on campus at UCSD and enjoying the adult students there. Im peddling my vampire play set in Dublin, A Taste for Blood, that features a feisty mature woman vampire (not a twit like Buffy or the heroine of the Twilight saga). My children: James is living here with his wife, Liberty, whom he met in Ireland. He walks the dogs regularly and has increased the beauty of our home, which is a nature reserve. Bryan is still at Apple, and Bridget writes/performs her music and works for causes. Hiroshi is ever the artist, winning grants and showing his work. Lots of grandkids: eight at last count. Pets: We had a coyote problem until we increased our population of rescue dogs or wandering strays, including one pitbull called Backup, who is in charge of regular raids into the canyon. The other dogs we have are two catahoulas called Fionn and Maeve; three terriers (terrors?): Soirse (freedom in Irish, a war cry); Princess Trashka von Dumpen, a Tijuana trash dog, who is really a Russian princess who fled to Germany and married a Russia nobleman (hence the von in her last name); and of course, the king of all, Genghis Khan, true to his name, an aggressive fighter who makes alliances with females wherever he goes, which necessitates his being a fighter. We have dampened his ardor to make him into a respectable citizen on the doggie beach. Oh yes, and two parrots, an African Grey called Dracula (he can appear threatening until you kiss him) and a cockatoo, Ariel, who dances delightfully when you sing a South African rugby song to her in Afrikaans. In Memoriam Dr. Henry W.
