Around School Athletics Sports Recaps Fall Cross Country Both boys and girls teams won Independent School League (ISL) conference championships and brought the trophies back to Latin, while also advancing to the Sectional meet, with the girls winning Regionals and Sectionals! e team had two All-Regional athletes, four All-Sectional athletes and nine All-Conference athletes. e girls nished 14th in state, seven spots higher than last year. Marianne Mihas '21 earned All-State honors. Dan Daly received the ISL Coach of the Year award for both girls and boys cross country. Field Hockey e team nished second in the ISL and was seeded 12th in the state tournament, falling to #5 seed Lake Forest Academy in a tough 2-3 loss in the Regional game. Talia Smith '19 earned All-State First Team honors, and Zoe Warms '18 was given the IHSFHA Sportsmanship Award. Boys Golf e boys had a successful season, with the varsity compiling a 3-2 ISL record and nishing second in the ISL tournament, beating rival Francis Parker by 2 shots. e Romans earned third place in Regionals and advanced to Sectionals. Jim Duszak was named ISL coach of the year. Girls Golf e sophomore year of the girls golf program welcomed three new players to the squad. ese nine players racked up an 11-2 winning season, going undefeated in ISL competition. roughout the season, the Romans were match medalists 21 times. e team advanced through Regionals with a third place nish and competed in a challenging Sectional, breaking through to the top half of the eld with a fth place nish and missing the State-qualifying score by nine strokes. Soccer As the defending state champion, this year's team played this fall with a target on its back. Every opponent brought its best eort against Latin. e 11 veterans and 11 new additions to the team rose to the challenge and had an outstanding season, including winning the IHSA Regional championship (fourth in a row). Jonah Schenk '19 was named the ISL Player of the Year. Sailing e team grew from six sailors last year to 12 this year – enough to roster both a varsity and JV. Latin qualied for the single-handed (ACCs) and double-handed (Cressy) National High School Championships this fall and competed in six regattas at the varsity level. Swimming e team had a phenomenal season, due in large part to the addition of six new freshmen to the team. e team wrapped up the season at the IHSA Sectional meet where it placed sixth overall. All three relay groups had season-best times by a wide margin. Mandy Duncan '18 was the recipient of the Aquaroman award, which celebrates an extraordinary commitment to the sport of swimming. Tennis e team nished the season with a 12-7 overall record this year, and 5-1 in the ISL. For the rst time in Latin School history, the #1 doubles team, comprised of Annabel Edwards '19 and Maya Seymore '18, nished the season with a state doubles championship and a 24-2 record. In the process, they won 194 more games than their opponents. Edwards and Seymore nished rst in the ISL, rst at Sectionals and rst at State. A S 18
