1948 Robert Basta passed away at Sherman House Hospice in Arizona on September 24, 2015. Bob earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University in 1953. His career with the Leeds and Northrup Company in North Wales, PA, was interrupted by a tour of duty in Japan, where he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. After returning from the army, Bob became district sales manager of the Akron/Canton office of Leeds and Northrup until his retirement in 1979. Bob loved family trips, tennis and golf. We extend our condolences to his wife, Polly, his children and grandchildren, his brother, George Basta '46, and all of his family and friends. 1950 Bob Katz met up with Dick Oldenburg for lunch in New York this past April. e two had a marvelous time catching up. Bill Ullman passed away peacefully on September 27, 2015 at his home in Pocomoke City, MD. After graduating from the University of Arizona, Bill served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army stationed in Panama, where he developed a love of flying. After leaving the army, Bill decided to start a ranch in South Dakota. In the early '80s, he began building his sailboat, "Saguaro," in an airplane hangar on his ranch, and he and his family spent many years sailing rivers and the ocean blue. We extend our condolences to Bill's wife and children, sister Kiki Ullman Case '52, and all of his family and friends. Dr. Philip Wells Shambaugh died on October 7, 2012 after a long and courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. After graduating from Harvard Medical School, Wells practiced internal medicine and pathology before transitioning into psychiatry. During the Vietnam era, he served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves. After his service, he set up his own psychiatry practice specializing in child psychiatry and authored many articles. Wells loved reading poetry and was fluent in Italian. Congratulations to Ivan Strauss, winner of the 2015 Edwin Van Gorder III Award. is community-wide award is given in recognition of volunteer effort and devotion to Latin, and the rendering of extraordinary service to the school. Ivan's loyalty and dedication are evident in all the ways he has served his alma mater, including in leadership positions as alumni trustee, director on the Alumni Association Board of Directors, class representative, reunion planner, committee member of strategic planning, campaign and giving roles. Equally valuable are the many smaller, behind-the-scenes, ways Ivan connects Latin alumni, shapes the direction of the alumni program and supports alumni and school events. Randall Dunn bestowed the award to Ivan at the Alumni Leadership Luncheon in June. Also pictured, Alumni Association President Cam McKinney '93.
