16 L AT I N M A G A Z I N E AT H L E T I C S Roman Domination Varsity Cross Country Head Coach: Dan Daly Assistant Coach: Angie Bezdek omson ISL Place: 1st Girls Regional & Sectional Champions Boys & Girls State Qualifiers e 2014 season was historic. e teams were moved up to the Class 2A level after a fantastic 2013 season at Class 1A. Both teams defended their conference titles in commanding fashion. In state competition, the girls won both regionals and sectionals and the boys were second and third respectively. ese are the first teams in school history to advance to state in the much more competitive 2A bracket. e girls finished sixth and the boys 18th in the state race. Abigail Nadler '15 was the top ISL, regional and sectional runner. Varsity Field Hockey Head Coach: Valerie Lawson Assistant Coaches: Read Lanctot, Jen Hayman Record: 10-6-1 ISL Place: 2nd Regional Champions is was a season that truly showed the physical and emotional strength of the field hockey program. e girls played a tough sectional game against the defending state champions Lake Forest High School and had an incredible goal by Natalie Pontikes '16 with one second remaining on the clock. ree players earned All-State recognition, and half of the varsity squad received All-Academic honors. Varsity Golf Head Coach: Jim Duszak Assistant Coach: Jan Wilson ISL Place: 2nd Regional: 2nd Place Sectional: 2nd Place State: 6th Place Who could have predicted that this would be the season to break the school nine-hole scoring record or post the best finish at the Class 2A state tournament? Fifteen underclassmen and eight upperclassmen took to the links in early August in pursuit of the perfect round of golf. oughts quickly turned away from personal success and refocused on team goals. e Romans advanced through the regional and sectional tournaments to earn the opportunity to represent Latin at state and took sixth place in the tournament. is was the highest finish by any Latin golf team. After three trips downstate, Knox Montgomery '15 finished the tournament with a personal best 11th place finish. e varsity also broke the dual match nine-hole scoring record against Northridge Prep, shooting 144. Varsity Soccer Head Coach: Tom Bower Assistant Coach: Jay Tebbens Record: 17-7-1 ISL Place: 3rd Regional Champions, Sectional Champions is group used resilience, intensity and consistency to achieve an extraordinary season. e Romans started by winning the tough LaSallian Cup tournament for the first time in school history. ey finished third in the ISL, the toughest Class 1A conference in the state, and notched 12 shutouts during the season. In the IHSA playoffs, they did not concede a goal during regulation play as they swept regionals and sectionals to reach the supersectional (quarterfinal), a feat accomplished by only one other Latin team, in 2010. "e 2014 fall sports season was special for many reasons. Girls and boys cross country and girls volleyball moved up in class – played tougher teams and still brought home wins. Many of our teams or athletes ranked between sixth and 18th in state competition (girls tennis, girls and boys cross country, field hockey, boys soccer and golf ). Numerous freshmen impressed on the big stage. All teams showed perseverance through injuries. Some of our seniors caught national attention in their sport. rough it all, the Latin athletes and coaches held to a high standard not only in the record book, but also in sportsmanship. eir legacy and this past fall season will be a benchmark for many teams and athletes to follow." –Tom Bower
