UP FRONT Letter from the Head of School Dear Latin Community, Unlike so many of you, I did not know Dr. Dolezal well. In 2011, as I was eagerly awaiting my arrival at Latin, he, for the first time in 50 years, was planning his permanent retirement. So, except for my early visits to the school, we did not overlap. It has been clear to me over the past few months what a tremendous loss that was for me. The outpouring of emotion, gratitude and pure love for this man has been an incredible thing to experience. To take a quote from one of his favorite texts Bleak House by Charles Dickens some people do a little, and make a great deal of noise, and others do a great deal and make no noise at all. From where I sit today, I can confidently say that Dr. Dolezal was someone who did a great deal. For one, he did a great deal of teaching. After 50 years, his impact has been felt by generations of Latin students. What struck me as I was reading the remembrances was the consistency of that impact. If you removed the signatures from many of the emails we received, it would be almost impossible to distinguish which ones were from the class of 2006 and which were from 1966. Dr. Dolezal did not start off slow and get better with age. He was great for 50 years. Dr. Dolezal also did a great deal of inspiring. Whether it was imparting insight to a colleague through his legendary Inspiramus addresses or igniting a passion in a student, his ability to inspire, to build confidence, to make people feel hopeful, was a rare and wonderful quality he shared generously. Lastly, he did a great deal of giving of himself. His love of literature, his dedication to the craft of teaching, his wit, his humor and his friendship were things that never ran out for the people at Latin. Did he ever have a bad day? It seems not. He was wholly committed to this place and everyone here. So, on behalf of all of Latin, I thank you, Dr. Dolezal, for your lifetime of noiselessly doing such a great deal. Our inspired teachers, our passionate alumni and our connectedness are your legacy. You have created a community of life-long learners that thrives far beyond the walls of Latin but will always call this home because this is where you were. All that you have given is in this place and of this place and will continue to be for generations of Latin students. We will see to it. Sincerely, 2 L AT I N M AGAZINE Randall Dunn
