alumni voice Alumni Scholarship Dinners When Latin friends come together around the table, conversation is sure to be lively. When those friends are Latin alumni and guests, add in a dash of thoughtful reminisces, a pinch of hilarious anecdotes, and much laughter for good measure. So, it is hardly surprising that Latin's Alumni Scholarship Dinners were once again warm and welcoming celebrations of community. Scholarship Dinner 2010 raised more than $1.3 million dollars for Latin's financial aid program, well beyond all expectations (see the story on page 5). The participation of alumni who aren't parents of current students, shows an extraordinary commitment to Latin, scholarship, and giving back. Our 2010 hosts included Marianne Landa Chao '86 and her husband David; Jeanine Forloine '99 and Eric Chmiel; Elizabeth and Gardner Lane '95, with Laura and Mark Wimbiscus Yoon '01; and Annie Simpson and Zach Spreitzer '95. Owing to inclement weather in Washington, D.C., Tyler Holt '99 will be rescheduling his event with alumni there. Tyler's and Marianne's in New York marked the first Scholarship Dinners held 52 Latin Magazine outside the Chicago area. Gardner Lane, Zach Spreitzer and Jeanine Forloine have all hosted scholarship dinners in previous years. For Marianne Landa Chao, who is one of 22 "lifers" in her class, hosting a Scholarship Dinner is all about spending time with good friends and providing future generations access to the Latin experience. "I feel like I can call up any Latin alum and just start the conversation with 'I went to Latin, graduated in 1989…' and that the response is always the same: genuine excitement to find someone who was lucky enough to share that same experience and be a part of a community that gets broader and more amazing every year," Marianne says. Great memories at every age level fuel Marianne's connections to Latin. For her, hosting a Scholarship Dinner was a natural expression of gratitude. "It felt like good friends coming over to reminisce…it was such a great evening." Guests at the home of Jeanine Forloine '99 were treated to a gourmet dinner that rivaled the best restaurants in Chicago. Jeanine's fiancé, Eric Chmiel,
