Mary Cone O'Riley '52 Mary Dimetros Shipp '56 A devoted Latin alumna, parent and grandparent, Mary Dimetros Shipp '56 passed away on December 26, 2011. In her senior yearbook, Mary's classmates described her as the "sweetest" and noted that "this girl just spreads good will wherever she goes." Anyone who had the opportunity to collaborate with Mary knows just how true that description was. Throughout her life, Mary remained close with her Latin classmates and played an invaluable role in the planning of the Class of 1956's 50th Reunion and other alumni gatherings. Classmate Diana Levin fondly remembers reconnecting with Mary years after graduating from Latin at Wesley hospital, where both gave birth to daughters two days apart! Their daughters likewise went on to become Latin classmates and dear friends. Diana notes that Mary was an extremely loyal woman, and that loyalty extended to her friends, family, classmates and Latin. The mother of three Latin alums – Lara Shipp Shiffman '85, Drew Shipp '88 and Gregg Shipp '88 – Mary was not only an active alumna, but also an extremely involved Latin parent. She led field trips as part of Latin's Discovery Chicago program and volunteered with the Parent Association. In 1982, Mary and her husband, Barry, established the Shipp Award, which is awarded annually to an outstanding educator. In her later years, Mary remained connected to the school through her beloved grandchildren, current Latin students Ryder '25 and Brandon '23. (Beloved granddaughter, Sloan, does not attend Latin.) Always a joyful presence in any of her many roles at Latin, Mary will be greatly missed. Latin School of Chicago 33
