Perez Family Community Scholarship We have always viewed this great country as the land of opportunity. And in this country, we believe that education is the great equalizer, leveling the playing field and allowing those of humble origin to grow and rise through hard work and achievement. Unfortunately, educational opportunity is not universally available, particularly for children whose first language is not English. Having been raised in Colombia and then sent to the United States to receive a world-class education, I have an appreciation for the obstacles facing young people whose families and friends may not speak English. For these young people, the sacrifices they must make in order to receive a great education may seem insurmountable, regardless of their talents. My wife and my daughter have both witnessed first-hand Latin's dedication to academics, community service and extracurricular activities as substitute teachers. They have personally worked with Latin's excellent and caring staff and recognize Latin's very special ability to prepare promising young people of all backgrounds for the world that awaits them upon graduation. Thus we are both honored and excited to be able to offer a deserving Hispanic student the opportunity to be a part of Latin's upper school and laud Latin School for being an institution that embraces and celebrates diversity. In the words of author Maya Angelou, "Diversity makes for a rich tapestry ... all threads are equal in value." Bill & Catherine Perez opening doors 40
