Marketplace Roman Connections In Print 1. DAVID F. NOBLE '52 David recently published an ebook, Correct Your Own English: How to Use Better and Fewer Words in Your Writing and Speaking. The book, now available on Amazon, condenses for writers and speakers of English valuable tips gathered from more than 35 years of experience. The three main parts of this ebook discuss in turn common mistakes in the choice of words (usage), the use of unnecessary words (wordiness), and the unintentional doubling of an idea (redundancy). The entries in each part of the ebook are arranged alphabetically for easy lookup, making this ebook a useful reference work. 2. PAUL RAPHAELSON '86 Paul recently published his first monograph: Brooklyn's Sweet Ruin: Relics and Stories of the Domino Sugar Refinery. A selection of large-scale photographs from the book was exhibited at the Front Room Gallery in New York City earlier this winter. In 2013, Raphaelson received permission from the developers of the shuttered Domino site to explore every square foot of the refinery just weeks before its gutting and demolition. He is the last photographer given access to the factory. The book includes an essay by the photographer on living and photographing in post-industrial America, and an in-depth historical text compiled by Raphaelson in collaboration with architectural historian Matthew Postal, PhD. The text draws from historic images and maps, newspaper and magazine articles, corporate documents, unpublished manuscripts and interviews with former refinery employees. 3. KELLI RANDALL '94 Kelli published her latest book, American Realist Fictions of Marriage: From Kate Chopin, Edith Wharton to Frances Harper, Pauline Hopkins, which is now available on Amazon. Her book intervenes in the field of American literary realism by arguing that the selected marriage fiction of Kate Chopin, Frances Harper, Pauline Hopkins, William Dean Howells, Emma Dunham-Kelly and Edith Wharton interrogates the possibility of harmonious societies based on racial, gender and social equality. In a wider context, American Realist Fictions of Marriage aims to widen the conventional narrow focus on canonical realist writers by highlighting intellectual exchanges that were taking place between traditional and non-traditional writers about marriage. Kelli serves as associate vice president for Academic Affairs, dean of Liberal Arts and Humanities, and SACSCOC Liaison at Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC. She is a tenured professor of English within the Department of English and Foreign Language at Livingstone College. Her scholarly research interests include race and realism, voodoo in writings by women of color, and the role of historically black colleges and universities in the 21st century. Enterprising 4.
