Around School Arts Sing Us a Song Each choral concert – winter and spring – has a general theme. ese themes tie all of the songs together in each program. Past themes have included "Kings, Queens and Royal ings," "e Sun, the Moon and the Stars," "Food, Glorious Food!," and "Latin rough the Years," which was the theme for the spring concert during Latin's 125th year celebration. is year's winter concert theme was "Choral Music Around the World." Middle and Upper School Vocal Music Director William Lea oers some insight into the concert preparation process: "Within each class, the students not only learn their pieces for the concert, but information is provided about each piece in order to give context and history. Students delve into a culture, a composer or a style of music that relates to the pieces they are performing. For example, the middle school choir prepared 'Durme, Durme' for the winter concert, a Sephardic Jewish lullaby that is sung in the Ladino language. Students heard original recordings of the piece, compared the language with other dialects, and explored the message and meaning of the piece. e winter concert also included songs from such places as Scotland, Kenya, South Africa, Israel, Brazil and Tanzania. "Using the information the students learned in class, they chose one of the pieces to research in further detail. From this research, they were asked to write a short narration, which could be used to introduce the piece at the concert. e most well-written and well-researched narrations were selected and read during the middle school program." 16 A S
