A Moving Lower School Moment Described by Lower School Director Sally Ott as creative, energetic, smart and full of accomplishments, members of the Class of 2018 celebrated their graduation from fifth grade on June 3. Because of the grade's move to the middle school this fall, June's final ceremony was especially poignant for many and was filled with fond remembrances, wise words of advice, song and a few tears. The morning began with a heartfelt welcome from Richie Parrillo, who took the opportunity to thank the lower school teachers for their support and guidance through the lower school years. Classmates Grace Landsberg and Jessie Mitchell shared humorous memories of their time in the lower school that started with the "exciting and scary" moments in junior kindergarten and continued with unforgettable experiences like the first field trip in senior kindergarten, the Ellis Island simulation in second grade, learning cursive writing in third grade and tackling homework in fourth grade. Jack Denny and Maya Seymore addressed some of the most important lessons and themes of their fifth grade year. "Leadership. Teamwork. Fun. The fifth grade year was full of these three words," Maya explained to the audience of parents, grandparents and friends. "We worked together as a team, learning life lessons as a community of friends." In a special surprise, Interim Head of School Shelley Greenwood took advantage of the fifth grade's affection for the Muppets by singing "Saying Goodbye" from The Muppets Take Manhattan movie as her closing remarks, bringing tears to the eyes of many in the room. l The lower school's last class of graduating fifth graders celebrates an end to an era.
