Around School Athletics Sports Recaps Winter BOYS BASKETBALL e Romans finished third in the Independent School League (ISL), played in the Consolation Championship of the ICCP/Westmont Holiday Tournament, advanced to the IHSA Regional Championship game, and beat Francis Parker – twice! – at the buzzer. GIRLS BASKETBALL Latin's girls basketball team ended the season with a 21-8 record overall and 7-0 in the ISL. e team decisively earned its ninth consecutive ISL crown and its nineteenth title in the last 20 years. ey also advanced to the Sectional Final in the IHSA Class 2A tournament earning a Regional title along the way. BOYS ICE HOCKEY e hockey team finished fourth in the IHSHL Champions Division with a 10-7-3 record, including a six game winning streak. Entering the IHSHL Playoffs, the Romans (fourth seed) swept Highland Park (fifth seed) in two games, 3-2 and 6-3. Facing-off against number one seed Buffalo Grove/Hersey/ Wheeling in the league Semifinals, the Romans fell in two tightly fought games, 3-0 and 2-1. e team was ranked in the top 20 in the state during the regular season and had a record of 18-15-7. GIRLS ICE HOCKEY e team finished second in the regular season, and in league playoffs finished third in the top half of the league. Latin defeated New Trier in the State Quarterfinal game winning 5-2, but lost to defending State Champions Loyola Academy in the State Semifinal game. BOYS SWIMMING e team wrapped up the season at the Sectional swim meet in February, where they finished seventh overall. Placing in the top 12 at Sectionals and scoring points for Latin include: Henry Block '18 - eleventh in the 200 IM, eleventh in the 100 fly; Ben Golub '17 - tenth in the 50 free, fourth in the 100 fly; Tucker Jones '20 - eighth in the 100 breast; Frank Joslin '17 - tenth in the 200 IM; and Sam Orlin '17 - tweflth in the 100 free. Spring BASEBALL is year's team really loved to play. ey came to practice every day with a strong work ethic, a desire to improve and a belief in the idea of team. While the win/loss column doesn't reflect the most successful season, this team learned a lot about themselves both as baseball players and individuals. GIRLS SOCCER e 2017 varsity squad continued Latin's strong soccer tradition, three-peating as ISL Champions, and making it four in a row as IHSA Regional Champions. It should be noted these feats were accomplished in Class 2A. Regularly competing against schools two to four times larger, the team rose to the challenge again and again, concluding with a thrilling double-overtime loss to eventual State runner-up Wheaton Academy. SOFTBALL e Varsity softball team was the IHSA Class 2A Regional Champion this year. With a record of 6-9, the Romans had three players batting over 400, 85 strikeouts at the mound and a team fielding percentage at .865. BOYS TENNIS It was a stellar season for varsity tennis. In addition to an undefeated regular season, the team won multiple tournaments in April, including the Evanston Invite, the Brother Rice Crusader Classic and the Roman Invitational. April's momentum carried into May as the boys clinched their twelfth straight ISL Championship, a fourth straight IHSA Sectional Championship and a Class 1A runner-up finish at the IHSA State Finals. e Romans dominated their match duals throughout the season, combining for a 56-6 match record, and an overall season match record of 111-30.
