Class Notes Roman Connections Charles Witz, a pioneering Chicago rock music promoter and attorney, died on September 1, 2016. Charlie helped found 22nd Century Productions, one of the early rock music promotion companies in Chicago, where he put on memorable concerts at the Auditorium eater and other Chicago venues in the early 1970s. He worked with many top artists, including Janis Joplin, e Grateful Dead, Smokey Robinson, the Doors and ree Dog Night. Charlie later went on to a successful general law practice in Chicago. He was also a world-class backgammon player, with his 1978 European finals showdown analyzed in e New York Times and a second-place finish at the championships in Monte Carlo. Block III passed away on July 1, 2016. P.D. lived his entire life on a two-block stretch of Lake Shore Drive, first in his childhood home, then as a bachelor and finally in his current home since 1967 with his wife of 48 years, Judith Stofer Block. After graduation from Yale, P.D. worked for the Inland Steel Company for 27 years, finishing as vice president of purchasing before retiring from the steel business. While at Inland, P.D. served as a five-year reservist in the Air Force. In 1985, P.D. opened the Chicago office of the Capital Guardian Trust Company, a Los Angeles-based investment management firm. He retired from Capital Guardian after 18 years with the company. P.D. was an avid fly-fisherman who traveled the world with friends and family in search of the ultimate catch. His journeys also took him many times to Africa, where he loved escaping into the bush on safari. When not traveling, P.D. Block could often be found at one of Chicago's sporting venues, as he was a lifelong fan of the Chicago Blackhawks, Bears, White Sox and Northwestern Wildcats football. P.D. was an active contributor to the Chicago community, chairing the boards at the Shedd Aquarium and e Chicago Historical Society, and was an active board member of many other organizations, including Children's Memorial Hospital, the Better Government Association, Chicago Commons, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, Latin School and Phillips Academy. He was also appointed to the National Strategic Materials Committee of the U.S. Department of the Interior in the mid-1980s, was asked by Mayor Richard Daley to head the Chicago School Finance Authority in the early 1990s, and served as a director with the Rand McNally Company for many years. We extend our condolences to his wife, Judy; brother, Andy '57; daughter, Margie Stineman '92; son, Flip '89; grandchildren, Vanessa '23, P.J. '25, Hope '30, Meg '25 and Stofer Stineman '27; great niece, Colette Block '15; and all of his family, friends and classmates. 1956 Diana Karasik Levin Peter Burrows Diana Karasik Levin gives a shout-out to her classmates who attended the 60th reunion! Terry Taylor, Jim Pyott, Barbara Koretz Katz, Fred Gorr, Bob Weiner, Eddie Parmacek, Peter Burrows, Cindy Sargent, Karen Swanson Kearns, Tish Coolidge Ayars and Phoebe Beatty McMillan all joined in the fun.
