Athletics BASEBALL Ethan Jones Lawrence University CROSS COUNTRY Simon Ricci California Institute of Technology SAILING Mark Davies Northwestern University Allie Cahn Boston University SWIMMING Leah Cravitz Wesleyan University Chris Maurice Colorado College TRACK Simon Ricci California Institute of Technology Keegan Barone Carnegie Mellon VOLLEYBALL Catie Cronister Wofford College Trading in the Orange & Blue Several members of the class of 2016 are continuing their athletic careers at colleges and universities. one singles player, Alessandra Bianco '18 was the State runner-up. e combined play of the three propelled the Romans to a third-place finish in State, the highest finish in the State tournament in Latin School history. Girls volleyball also made history in 2016. e team won conference (eighth year in a row) and the IHSA Regional championship (second in a row) before moving on to the IHSA Sectional. Hosting the Sectional final before a packed, rafter-rockin' crowd in the Field Gym, the girls defeated nemesis IC Catholic Prep in three sets to win the IHSA Sectional championship for the first time in Latin's 128-year history. Moving on to the Super-Sectional, the Romans defeated Watseka High School to advance to the IHSA Final Four in Redbird Arena at Illinois State University. An action-packed weekend concluded in two hard-fought three-set losses, and Latin brought home the trophy for fourth place in Illinois. Boys soccer surpassed the outstanding achievements of the past few years by realizing historical success. Despite being moved to a higher class (playing schools two to three times larger), the Romans won Regional and Sectional championships (third year in a row for both). en, after losing the Super-Sectional the last two years, Latin defeated Vernon Hills by a score of 3-2 in double-overtime. is result put the team into the IHSA Final Four for the first time in Latin history. e team defeated Benet Academy 1-0 in double overtime in the Semifinal and then beat Mt. Carmel 3-1, tying the game with seven minutes left in regulation and scoring two goals in double overtime, to win the first boys soccer State championship in Latin history. ere was history made in the middle school, too. e middle school boys cross country team won the IESA Class 2A State meet for the first time (margin of victory was 50 points!). Marianne Mihas '21 was State champion in the girls IESA Class 2A State meet, becoming Latin's first individual middle school State champion. Go Romans!
