Around School Athletics Latin Athletes Make History On August 10, Latin's fall sports season began much like it does at the end of each summer. Athletes and coaches gathered on the fields, in the pool, in the park, at golf courses and in the gyms to begin training for the interscholastic competition that would commence before classes officially start. While hopes were high, as they always are, little did anyone know that history would be made. Boys golf gave the first inkling that something special might be on the horizon. On September 1, the boys team beat conference nemesis North Shore Country Day by a single stroke. is victory enabled boys golf to capture the conference championship, the first since 2011. More good golf news followed. For the first time in school history, enough girls came out to form a full team. All freshmen – they nicknamed themselves the "Fresh Six" – the team went undefeated in dual competition and entered the IHSA Regional tournament with high hopes. Finishing second qualified the entire team for the Sectional. A bright future lies ahead for this group. Girls tennis had the most exciting year ever in Latin's 128-year history. After both the league championship and IHSA Sectional title, the Romans moved on to the State tournament. Never before had more than one Latin player still been active in the State finals on the last day of the tournament. is year three players were still fighting for Latin. e number one doubles team of Eleanor Ruscitti '17 and Maya Seymore '18 battled tough opponents to a sixth-place finish.
