UPPER SCHOOL During the upper school years, students make deep connections with their teachers and their peers and actively shape their academic program. The upper school curriculum offers a college preparatory program bolstered by exceptional educational opportunities that asks students to dig deep, think critically, and commit themselves to fully pursuing their intellectual passions both inside and outside the classroom. Latin's educational approach is student-centered and individualized, meaning no two students take the same path. By understanding how each child learns best, teachers help students identify their passions and take on new challenges. Students are encouraged to do, to create, to try, and to not be afraid to fail. The focus is on the process, not the outcome, which helps students build resilience, remain intrinsically motivated, and succeed. Upper school curriculum Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion As identified and reaffirmed in the 2019 Strategic Design: Latin Leads, Latin continuously strives to cultivate an inclusive and supportive climate for all constituents and create a school community where all members, particularly those historically underrepresented, use their voices and thrive. In an effort to identify and elevate themes and priorities for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Latin, students, faculty, staff, families, alumni, Latin's DEI practitioners, the Board of Trustees, and senior leadership came together and examined the optimal path for improvement. Five recurring themes emerged: REPRESENTATION Hire and retain more faculty and staff of color. ACCOUNTABILITY Create a culture of accountability for racist and discriminatory behavior. INCLUSION Create strategy for improving feelings of inclusion for Black and Latino/Latinx students. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/EDUCATION Embed DEI work into Latin's culture by committing resources to programming and education for all constituencies. CURRICULUM Examine and adjust curriculum to better reflect/represent/include underrepresented perspectives school wide across all disciplines. The Latin community looks forward to partnering with the next Head of School to continue working toward these goals and upholding its commitment to cultivate a school community that is equitable, inclusive, and fosters a sense of belonging among all constituents.
