EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Latin is committed to providing students with immersive experiences that broaden their perspectives and deepen engagement with the world around them. During Project Week, upper school students spend one week each March exploring the world outside of the classroom. They may choose to learn more about a particular area of interest, including literature, art, technology, or the Civil Rights movements, or participate in community service or outdoor education, allowing them to travel the world or get to know their city in a new way. Middle school students spend a week in April engaged in their own project-based experiences. Fifth and seventh graders stay in town but engage outside of the classroom, while sixth and eighth graders explore the state capital and nation's capital, respectively. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Additionally, engagement and service within the community remains one of Latin's strongest values. Students in every division, faculty, staff, and parents/guardians work with more than 30 organizations throughout the city on a variety of initiatives. In addition to helping people, students are solving problems, making connections and becoming active citizens in the school and city. Most importantly, community engagement has influenced Latin's school culture and has become an important part of who Latin is as a community. Latin has been home to the High Jump program since 1989, High Jump equalizes access to education for Chicago middle school students who have exhibited academic ambition and potential and who are of limited economic means. Location and Local Culture Latin is situated in the heart of Chicago, the third-most populous city in the U.S. and the largest city in both the state of Illinois and the Midwest region with almost three million residents across 77 distinct neighborhoods. A bustling international center for education, finance, technology, arts, and culture, Chicago affords members of the Latin community numerous opportunities to engage, connect with, and learn from the world they live within. Chicago is home to leading universities such as the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Chicago, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. It also boasts a world-renowned arts/culture scene that includes The John G. Shedd Aquarium, The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Science and Industry, Field Museum, Steppenwolf Theatre, the Goodman Theater, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Joffrey Ballet.
