UP FRONT 2013 MLK Speaker: Wes Moore Bestselling author and activist Wes Moore visited Latin as the 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. speaker. Moore is the author of the critically acclaimed book The Other Wes Moore, which tells the story of how two men, with the same name, from the same struggling neighborhood, live very different lives but also experience parallels. While the author became a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran and successful businessman, the "other" Wes Moore 10 L AT I N M AGAZINE is serving a life sentence in prison for murder. The book grew out of their correspondence and conversations. "Dr. King's greatest legacy was that he was a man of pure action," Moore told an audience of students, faculty and staff during an assembly in Moody Church. "He was a man who saw that something was wrong and decided to do something about it." As Moore spoke about his book, he said that his goal for the story is to be a call to action. "I want people to understand how thin that line is between our life and someone else's life," Moore said, adding that sometimes all people need is a nudge in the right direction or a helping hand to make decisions that will have enormous impact on their lives. He called on the young people at Latin to translate their caring for others into taking those small actions and realizing that with them they can change people's lives. Randall Dunn echoed Moore's sentiments and the impact of Dr. King in a follow-up letter to parents: "I've had people in my life who were able to see things for me – opportunities, experiences – that I couldn't see for myself and cared enough to do something. Like Dr. King, they were people who made things happen. And, like Dr. King, their actions created ripple effects that are still felt today – in my life, every day." n
