Middle School Graduation
Described as a group that is sociable with a strong
sense of community, talented and respectful of
differences as well as full of promise, the Class of 2013
celebrated its eighth grade graduation on June 3.
Head of school Don Firke and Middle School
Director Deb Sampey shared valuable life advice with
the eighth graders for their years in high school and
beyond. Firke spoke about change and the top 10
most valuable lessons he has learned over the 40 years
since his middle school graduation, including embracing
a love for learning, intellectual pursuits and the
unknown, as well as enjoying time with family and
friends, and learning a musical instrument. Sampey

shared thoughts from venture capitalist Guy Kawasaki
about finding meaning and enjoying the process of
learning and innovation.
Student speakers Ian Spear and Ben Sullivan took
walks down memory lane, recalling the moments that
meant the most to their class – from going down to
assembly with the fifth graders when they were in first
grade to the eighth grade retreat and the Project Week
trip to Washington, D.C. Outgoing Class President
Michael Begel gave a "state-of-the class" address, and
Lana Ifergan thanked the faculty and staff, parents and
others who made the middle school years special.
