letter from the head Dear Latin Community, I would describe myself as a reader. I read a lot as a young boy . . . particularly during the long Ohio winters. I would anticipate the hours after school I could spend with the latest Hardy Boys mystery. Although my collection was not extensive, I had a friend whose was, and I read my way through his library. It was years later, in college, that I learned to write. Working one-on-one with my professor as my editor, I came to appreciate the skill involved in the telling of a story. As with many educators, my journey with the written word has been a very personal and meaningful one. I have enjoyed thinking about that journey as I read this magazine. From the initial step of mastering the grasp of a pencil, to experimenting with slam poetry, to editing a first novel, it is amazing to see the interesting and varied paths students can follow with their use of words. It also is wonderful to see the thorough and enlightened ways in which our teachers and librarians foster a love of reading and a passion for writing throughout a student's years at Latin. And, clearly, based on the alumni profiles, the passion for words remains with students long after they leave Latin. The men and women featured here all have found their voices and are making their mark via pen, pencil or computer. Again, their paths have been diverse and personally rewarding. Although my Hardy Boys days are behind me, I do still find time for daily reading. Whether fiction, non-fiction or poetry, I am mostly intrigued by the experience of finding a new perspective, a new way of looking at something. I hope you find something new within these pages. Plus, winter is here . . . perfect time for reading. Enjoy, Don Firke 2 Latin Magazine
