Ms. Shapiro taught first grade for many years, and in her "retirement" continued her devotion to education as a reading teacher at Latin. She found joy helping young children discover the power of reading and appreciation of art that contributes to a lifelong sense of curiosity and love of learning. In Ms. Shapiro's classroom, every morning began with music and song at the piano with students. Her belief that excellence in education was a right for all children informed her teaching in both the public and private school sectors. Equity and justice were foundations in her own life in and out of the classroom. She will be remembered by generations of Latin students, parents and faculty for her kindness, grace, wit and gentle wisdom. We extend our condolences to her son, Aaron Shapiro '92, and all of her family, colleagues and friends. Former Foreign Language Department Chair and long-time Spanish teacher Marsha Dragonetti passed away at home on December 1, 2019. After graduating from Mundelein College in 1963, Marsha joined the Peace Corps as an ESL teacher and was stationed in Turkey, where she met Giuseppe "Pino" Dragonetti, her husband of more than 50 years. Marsha taught Spanish and ESL at Chicago's Bowen High School for 10 years before becoming a Spanish teacher at Latin. For more than 30 years, Marsha's grace and charm were an everyday presence at Latin. She accompanied several generations of students on memorable Project Week trips and inspired them to explore their world through language and travel. She will be missed by all fortunate to have known her. We extend our condolences to Pino, her sons Michael '99 and Alex '01, and all of her family, friends and colleagues. 13 ROMAN CONNECTIONS 42
