Class Notes 1969 Gail Dugas Ron Pen Cherished classmates in the class of 1969, we are recklessly rolling downhill toward our semi-centennial gathering. I considered encrypting this communication in Pig Latin. Most appropriate since this is the Latin School we are talking about. Remembering how teachers were wont to intercept notes passed in a class, I recalled putting the contents in code. I thought myself very clever, but people like Clarissa Flint, F. Courtlandt, R. Gilmore and Judy Yohe Kritzberg were never fooled by this technique. I am hoping that we will all return to Chicago for the rites, rituals, and revels surrounding our 50th reunion on October 4 and 5, 2019. Cordially, Ron Camille Blinstrub writes: "e Chicago History Museum magazine has just published a lovely article about my mother, singer Shelby Jean Davis." e article details Davis' beginnings in radio as the 'Little Mountain Sweetheart' through her successful career in jazz. See the winter edition of Chicago History Magazine for the full article. 4 5 1972 Peter Vernon Herndon passed away on January 16 surrounded by family after a long struggle with cancer. Peter earned an associate's degree from the Culinary Institute of America and was an executive with Hilton Hotels Corporation for 25 years. His desire to stay in the islands led him to the position of Executive Vice President at Haseko (Hawaii) Inc., and he ultimately started his own hotel and real estate consulting company. Peter was a master chef, avid boater, fisherman and sportsman. He was known for his Caesar salad, dedication to the Chicago Bears, storytelling and above all, his compassionate spirit. 1974 Mary Haber We look forward to celebrating our 45th reunion this October and wonder how can that be? It seems like only yesterday we dedicated the yearbook to Mr. Behrns. Gone but not forgotten are the days of literature classes with Mr. Hare, field hockey in the park and myriad other things. What are the things you remember most? Join me to reminisce, to catch up and to celebrate on October 5-6. Be there or be square! – Mary Haber 1978 Liz Garvin passed away on February 22, 2019, after a short illness. Friends and family gathered in Chicago to celebrate her life on May 11, and in New York on June 2. When Liz launched ERG Intentio LLC, her event design company, in 2009, Bizbash.com wrote, "[Liz] got her start as a stage manager at Manhattan's Palladium nightclub in the late 1980s. From there she went to Robert Isabell Inc., where she worked [for 18 years] on events like MoMA's Party in the Garden and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute gala and private parties for people such as Bette Midler and Jann Wenner." Liz's production and lighting design work took her around the world. Liz was a long-time class rep for Latin and loving friend to many. 1979 Catharine Brooks-Fine Chuck Rich Caroline Prochotska Rogers While it may not feel like it, Class of '79, it has been 40 years since the marquee on the Village eater said "Animal House" and we left Latin. Forty years ago were we taking our AP exams, achievement tests and applying to colleges. Let's celebrate that simpler time with a great meet up. Save the date and join your old (literally) classmates for Homecoming and Reunion Weekend. It's time, make a plan, book your flight or get on the bus. It's going to be as good as our prom, and our prom was fun! Details can be found on the reunion website: www.latinschool.org/reunion or by contacting the Alumni Office. e Pro-Am team (Amanda Alcock Cawdrey and Caroline Prochotska Rogers) are busily digging into reunion photos. Do you have any to contribute to our slide show? Email alumni@latinschool.org. – Cathy, Colette, Carey, Nina and Caroline 6 4 5 ROMAN CONNECTIONS 40
