Elizabeth "Betsy" Rupprecht died on October 20, 2018, at the age of 86 after a long illness. Survived by her spouse, Janet Cunningham. Betsy was born in Paris to expatriate artists. e family returned to Chicago in 1932. Betsy established her career first as a portraitist. She became a professor of painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) and taught for 50 years, retiring in 2015. Betsy had a lifelong bond with the Ox-Bow School of Art, holding all positions beginning with student/ dishwasher to director of the school to board member. Her proudest achievement was facilitating the close association of Ox-Bow and the SAIC, an affiliation that she worked many years to bring to fulfillment. Betsy requested that there be no funeral but rather a party. 1951 Ivan Strauss John Stern's wife, Linda, passed away last February. ey had been married for 62 years. ey raised their three children in the Chicago area, first in the city and then in the northern suburbs. Later, as empty nesters, they moved to Hilton Head, where they ran a very popular independent book shop for many years. More recently John moved to Winter Park, FL, where his daughter Libby and her family live. He emphasizes that he is living in a regular apartment building, not a senior center or old age home. When asked why he didn't move back to Chicago where his three brothers and his son Teddy and family live, his reply was, "I don't do winter any more." Roger Bensinger, Ross Robbins and Ivan Strauss along with Bob Mendelson '52 enjoyed lunch at Mike Ditka's and a lot of catching up on life since Latin. ey reminisced 8 10 about old times this past November before Ross and his wife, Irene, departed for Florida and Roger for California, where they have winter homes. Email alumni@latinschool. org or phone 312.582.6050 to express your interest in participating. 1956 Peter Burrows Diana Karasik Levin Peter Burrows writes: "is is year number 80 for virtually all of us, my goodness. Approximately 79 classmates for all the years. As best as I can tell 50 are located, 12 missing, 17 deceased. Who was the oldest in our class? Possibly Marty Brown. And the youngest, maybe born 1939? I think virtually all of us were born in 1938 and would be 80 now. Hopefully still on the slopes or the tennis court – maybe just playing bridge! And so, warm congrats to all who made it this far, and memories to those who are gone or missing." 1959 Nancy Baker Our 60th Latin School reunion will take place October 4-6, 2019. Email alumni@latinschool. org or phone 312.582.6050 to express your interest in participating. 11 Barry Michael Bolewicz died April 19, 2018, at his home. He graduated from Latin and Stanford University and received his DDS in dentistry from the University of Illinois. He met his wife, Linda Pollack, at Stanford; they married in 1965. After Barry accepted an internship in the Air Force and served two years in the Philippines, they settled in Portland. In 1980, they established EasyGo Farm south of Hillsboro. Barry practiced in North Portland from 1971 until his retirement in 2004. He was a dentist by profession, but he also enjoyed farming their 10 acres on Chehalem Mountain, raising horses, sheep, goats and alpacas. He enjoyed fiber arts – knitting, weaving, felting, locker hooking and spinning. He was also an avid fisherman, enjoyed the outdoors, reading and crossword puzzles. Barry was featured in the Fall 2014 issue of Latin Magazine. 1961 Sally Mitchell Dorr Michael Joseph Gaines passed away on August 21, 2018, at the age of 75. Mike was born and raised in Chicago, but he and his family lived in many places before settling in Birmingham. He is preceded in death by his wife, best friend and soulmate, Sue. Mike is survived by his three daughters, four grandchildren and brother, Bob Gaines '67. Mike was successful in business, but he is mostly remembered for his generosity, love and support of his family. 12 14 10 11 14 12 ROMAN CONNECTIONS 36
