He was an amazing and generous teacher.
Its hard to imagine him no longer walking
the halls in his red elbow-patch cardigan, a
bundle of books under his arm, or fielding
burning lit questions while dispensing jelly
beans in his office.

I owe Richard Dolezal a great debt. Thanks to
him, I was inspired to earn my doctorate in
English literature and go on to a meaningful
and fulfulling teaching career. Also thanks to
him, I was the only freshman undergraduate
student who actually knew how to do a
research paper. I still retain the one he graded
when I was in his senior English class. I used
to wonder how he managed to correct all those
errant commas! I smile at the memory, even as
I wipe away the tears that honor him.
