Upper School Graduation In his opening remarks at Commencement on June 7, Upper School Director Ted Graf introduced Latins Class of 2012 as a group that will leave behind a legacy of communitybuilding and leadership. This graduating class, Graf told an audience of families and friends gathered in Moody Church, will have a lasting impact on the school in countless ways. During their final year, the seniors rewrote the student government constitution, set school records in athletics, raised the bar for student research by taking on ambitious Capstone and independent study projects, and made their mark on the stage and in the classroom. Class of 2012, I will miss your unpredictability, your inability to take no for an answer, your fierce creativity, your fiercer individuality and intellectualism, Graf told the graduating seniors. You have left Latin a better place. Student speaker Alex Kling also spoke about what his class will leave behind: We leave a silent legacy, one through people and through spirit. Every person you impacted here will impact someone else, every underclassman you said hello to, every junior you helped with college, every new idea you brought to class will return a thousand-fold. These are intangible gifts, Alex said, but they created an atmosphere, a feeling. And, feelings and emotions and spirits and souls, thats what makes a school what it is. With warmth and heartfelt words, faculty speaker Ann McGlinn shared advice with the graduating class about the importance of kindness and generosity of spirit. After handing out 106 diplomas, Head of School Randall Dunn concluded the ceremony by talking about the qualities of the members of the Class of 2012 and how those helped make his first year at Latin so positive. As individuals you are smart, wise and kind, Dunn said. You are thoughtful, enthusiastic and creative. You are destined for success not only because of these things, but because you care about people and you show them that you care in many different ways. n LATI N SCHOOL OF CHI CA GO 5
