Sam Hirshman Class of 2009 I was a lingerer in the office he shared with Ms. Dorer and thus had an opportunity to know Dr. D that many of my classmates did not. I got to talk to Dr. D pretty much every day, and he would tell me stories. Some context for one of my favorite of his stories is that Dr. D loved movies like he loved books. Among his favorites were those with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, and he ensured that we watched Lion in Winter in class if at all possible. One day, Dr. D was walking in Lincoln Park and he passed a lady. He recognized that it was Katharine Hepburn. He nodded and smiled, she nodded and smiled back, and they each continued on their way. Just a brief brush with a hero, but every time he told that story, the excitement in his voice was clear. Dr. D, and Ms. Dorer, too, gave me a great appreciation for Dickens. I wrote a paper on Bleak House. Dr. D told me he would bring in the serial publication of Bleak House he had at home and that Dickens brother was buried in Chicago. So, when I received the following in my grade report from Dr. D, I wasnt particularly surprised: Wherever Sam goes, Charles Dickens skips down the lane. Not your typical grade report comment, but I think we all can agree that Dr. D was not your typical teacher. As I think would only be appropriate, I will close with Dickens: Never have I from the first, and never shall I to the last, regard your part in my life, but as something sacred, never to be lightly thought of, never to be esteemed enough, never, until death, to be forgotten. Zichrono livracha, may his memory be a blessing. Dr. D loved movies like he loved books. Among his favorites were those with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Sam Hirshman, Class of 2009 Opposite page: Dick celebrates his birthday with colleague Tom Canright; This page: Dr. D made a list of some of his favorite films. Dr. Dolezal had the gift of guiding students through a meaningless jumble of words (such as Brownings My Last Duchess) into the essence of poetry and art. He changed my life and I think of him every day. Leslieanne Green Butler, Class of 1968 LATI N SCHOOL OF CHI CA GO 47
