college game schedule, then-Latin Head of School Frank Hogan and volleyball coach Deb Sampey reached out to her. She started at Latin in 2004 as the new girls varsity volleyball coach. Although college and high school sports are fairly different, Tortorello-Nelson says that she has brought the lessons she has learned from many coaches from her mother at St. Paul to club, Olympic development and college coaches to both. Although winning is important and I want our athletes to be successful, balance has been just as important to me in coaching, said Tortorello-Nelson. To me it is about developing the player but also having fun and leaving time for other things. I want players to leave still loving the sport. Her proudest moments are when a player she has mentored decides to stick with the sport and pursue a career in coaching. Since becoming assistant athletic director in 2007, Tortorello-Nelson has gradually handed over her coaching duties to help Tom Bower coordinate the hiring and scheduling for the nearly 60 athletic teams at Latin as well as to work with organizations such as Latin Captains Council and the Positive Coaching Alliance. However, Tortorello-Nelson continues to seek out new opportunities for enrichment. This fall, she started a part-time job as a gametime color analyst for womens volleyball on the Big Ten Network. I was always interested in broadcast journalism and thought, Why not? It is a way for me to stay connected to what I love. Although nervous in the beginning, by the end of the season, Tortorello-Nelson had covered more than a dozen games. I realized that everyone there is like me. They are into sports, they love the Big Ten, and they want to have fun with it, she said. Although winning is important and I want our athletes to be successful, balance has been just as important to me in coaching. I want players to leave still loving the sport. n LATI N SCHOOL OF CHI CA GO 19
