���My only goal was that she would find a college where she would thrive academically and socially, and that she would enjoy the time as much as I did my college years.��� ��� Parent, Penny Turner ��� Penny Turner in on smaller East Coast liberal arts colleges immediately. ���I wasn���t familiar with these schools, their names didn���t roll off the tongue. It was almost like a foreign language to me.��� But Justine was very self-driven. She threw herself into researching her choices and had a very clear vision of her goals. ���When I saw how reasonable and thoughtful she was in her approach, I backed off,��� says Turner. ���I thought, ���This is her process, and the next four years will be her experience.��� My only goal was that she would find a college where she would thrive academically and socially, and that she would enjoy the time as much as I did my college years.��� It also helped that Turner felt she could trust the College Counseling Office to alert her if there were any red flags. When it was less than a week before all materials for the Common Application were due and Justine still had not shared her essay with her parents, a concerned Turner called Lauren Lieberman, Justine���s counselor. ���I wanted to at least check in. Lauren promised us that she would go through Justine���s applications and make sure everything was in order. That was very reassuring.��� Happily, when Justine finally showed her mother the college essay the night before it was being sent out, it was just as impressive as Penny had hoped and suspected it would be. Trust in their child and his college counselor helped the Galainena family overcome an unexpected hurdle along the way. A.J., an exceptional student and talented water polo player, quickly focused his attention on M.I.T. The school had the academic rigor he was looking for and a strong water polo program with coaches who gave every indication that they were interested in adding him to the roster. He applied early action with a belief that he had a very good chance of being accepted. Although he was moving forward on applications to a few other schools, it came as a shock when he found out on December 15th that his application to M.I.T. was deferred. Graduates of the Class of 2010 were accepted to the following schools.
