up front A Trio Of Tributes Last May, Latin celebrated three Latin teaching legends as they marked significant milestones in each of their careers. Upper school mathematics teacher Judith Kritzberg retired after 45 years at Latin, and lower school librarian Leslie Rumney retired after 39 years. At the same time, Dr. Richard Dolezal celebrated his 50th anniversary at Latin. Education is not just for students who are enrolled in a school. It is a life-long process. Judy Kritzberg has encouraged generations of students, among them many young women, to study higher-level mathematics. Ms. Kritzberg has seen many changes during her time at Latin. None is more significant to her than the advances the school has made in welcoming a diverse student and family community. The gospel choir, especially, speaks to me of the distance we have come since 1962. . . Not only do I love the music, but I love seeing such a diverse group up there singing their hearts away. Her retirement marks a new chapter in Ms. Kritzbergs personal journey in learning, She plans to spend each day immersed in her passions for mathematics, the arts, literature, travel and politics, as well as new interests yet to be discovered. Judith Kritzberg Judith Kritzberg fell in love with Chicago shortly after arriving here in 1962. As Ms. Kritzberg told Latins Cum Laude Society last spring, she arrived for her interview at Latin clad in . . . a white straw hat, a navy blue silk suit, and white gloves. Although she had no teaching experience, no masters degree and no courses in education, she did have a freshly minted degree in mathematics. Ms. Kritzberg urged the Cum Laude recipients to understand that education is not just for students who are enrolled in a school. It is a life-long process. An engaging conversationalist and a life-long learner, she is known for her broad worldview and thoughtful, researched opinions. She has a special love of teaching calculus and He is quite simply the embodiment of good teaching. Class of 92 alum 10 Latin Magazine
