Scholarship Dinner 2010: One Night, One Community. A wonderful evening of community, commitment and hospitality, Scholarship Dinner 2010 exceeded all expectations, raising more than $1.3 million for Latin School's financial aid program. Seven hundred parents, alumni, faculty and staff came together on Saturday, February 27, all with the goal of making a Latin School education possible for more Chicago area children at an especially difficult time financially for many families. Eighty-one fabulous hosts (including a number of alumni who you can read about on page 52) prepared dinners in 32 homes, going out of their way to bring a creative and delicious flare to the evening. This year Latin raised a record-breaking $230,000-plus through a small but mighty live auction, For the Love of Latin paddle raise and night-of raffle ticket sales. The tone of the evening and the importance of its goals were made clear early, during cocktails in the upper school, with Class of 1982 alumna Miriam Rivera's moving words about her senior year as a scholarship recipient at Latin. Rivera shared the struggles her family experienced during her teenage years, and the significant impact financial aid had in keeping her not only at Latin, but in school: "Scholarships. What do they do? Because I didn't drop out of school my senior year I have become a venture capitalist, a donor and volunteer … [and] a former Fortune 500 executive at Google, I have served or am serving on the boards or advisory boards of a church, a battered women's shelter, the Stanford Law School, the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford University. "Without great teachers who cared about me, without your support, without your philanthropy, without the opportunities you and others like you provided during those early years, I would not be who I am…Thank you for changing the trajectory of my life and the lives of every Latin School student who receives a scholarship." (To view Miriam Rivera's speech in its entirety, log into RomanNet and view the video under "school videos" Scholarship Dinner 2010 – Alumni Speaker.) Scholarship Dinner 2010's success would not have been possible without the dedication of our hosts and many volunteers. A special thanks to Co-Chairs Emily Heisley Stoeckel and Kevin Stoeckel and Stephanie and Michael Chu for their support of this wonderful cause that helps to enrich the Latin experience for all.
