"Both schools were ecstatic to have us," says Teolis. The size and range of the Latin group, which quickly became known as the "Big Band," exposed German music students to new musical experiences – as well as challenges. "People were often doubtful about how we were going to make the numbers work, especially in smaller performance spaces," says Teolis. But Teolis scrambled (even having the Band and Chorus perform standing up for three concerts at the Allied Museum in order to avoid having to cut members from the program), the concerts were a success, and Latin was immediately invited back. "That is what it's all about," says Teolis. "The kids stepped up, and we made it work." With a few challenges and great commitment, Latin's Band and Chorus made beautiful music in Berlin. n At the Allied Museum in Berlin; (facing page) the full band and chorus, (top) Ben Manis '12, (bottom) Mike Teolis sharing a gift from Latin with the museum curator.
