Marian Wentworth '82 Marian Wentworth '82 currently works as the president and CEO of Management Sciences for Health (MSH), a non-governmental organization dedicated to addressing major health concerns around the globe. Her position at MSH is the latest in a deeply accomplished career that has centered on the marketing, development and distribution of vaccines. Marian's striking success and impact on communities all over the world wasn't always the path she saw herself on, though. Marian grew up in Uptown. At her elementary and middle school, she "counted 39 kids in [her] class and one teacher... the privilege [she] didn't have was access to folks who could feed [her] intellectually." Marian craved a richer learning environment. Reflecting on her high school application process, Marian said, "The most important thing a teacher did for me was say: 'you know, Marian, some of these schools have scholarship programs.'" Marian's four years at Latin proved to be transformative, as she grew into a confident student who, after some time, began to feel at home within Latin's walls. Beyond giving her access to an excellent education, Latin also changed Marian's outlook on life. She'd eventually view Latin as the place she began developing the critical skills to lead. "I think what Latin offered me was a foundational training to think about who I am. Self-awareness is a huge part of leadership, and being able to articulate who you are is a huge part of growing up, too… you can't be a strong leader, I don't think, without a strong sense of self and a strong sense of others, and I think that Latin School did a great job of giving me the tools and helping to instill those traits." Learning is an act of empathy. In addition to leadership skills, Marian came to appreciate the different kinds of people she met at Latin, and the perspectives she brought and took away from Latin. "You can easily imagine the whole world is living with the same experiences that you are if you don't see fairly early that there are folks just as smart as you are, maybe even a smidge smarter… who came from a very different background. It's one thing to know that intellectually… it's another to have a friend who's from somewhere else... I learned a great deal about how to talk to people who didn't come from the same background as me, and how to respect and appreciate… their stories." Several years ago, Marian visited with her former Latin Head of School, Jonathan Slater. "I thanked him for the things he did for me and what he said to me was, 'Marian, give back.'" — Lauren Salzman '18 & Will Slater '18, Editors, The Forum "You can't be a strong leader without a strong sense of self and a strong sense of others.
