ONE IN A MILLION
ird grade students are working on visualizing large numbers
– and saving the environment at the same time. ey are
committing the place values up into the thousands to memory
and beginning to grapple with the relationship between place
values by using concrete materials. To model this, they have been
using recycled soda cans and will continue to use them until
they build a model of a million. Four soda cans can represent
the size of a thousands cube. So far, they have created a bunch of
thousands cubes, allowing them to build many ten thousands,
and even some hundred thousands!
