Words from the Head Words from the Head Dear Latin Community, e theme we have chosen for the 2017-18 school year is leadership and our goal is to help students learn that there are many ways to be leaders. Research has revealed that some of the most important leadership characteristics include empathy, humility and intrinsic motivation to engage with others. ese are skills we seek to develop in our students at every age. Latin itself has always striven to lead through innovative teaching, and our unique academic experiences have become our hallmark. e Nazi Mind elective for sophomore students, developed in 1978, has stood the test of time. Forty years later, it is not only still relevant, but still unique in both approach – a mix of history and psychology, and design – a student-led mock trial. Students spend 100+ hours preparing for the culminating proceedings and the impact is lasting. Greg Morris '00 recently shared, "e preparation and experience was profound…" e remarkable mind behind Nazi Mind, Ingrid Dorer Fitzpatrick, shares her thoughts as a way of marking this significant milestone. More recently, our new concussion policy and practice places us as a leader among independent schools. Currently, Latin is the only independent school to administer the baseline King-Devick test to all students, not just student-athletes, as a way of better identifying concussions. Developing clear communication and treatment procedures has enhanced our ability to comprehensively support student wellness, as well as increase awareness among parents, teachers and coaches. Finally, the best evidence of our efforts at school is always present in the interesting, difficult, creative things our alumni do when they leave Latin. In this issue, we have featured a group from different decades who, through various paths, have found their places in the world of modern art. Our guest contributor, award-winning journalist and Latin alum, Laura van Straaten '86, shares the various paths they traveled and the part Latin played for each. Humility is a characteristic necessary for leadership and I am truly humbled by the strength and impact of the Latin community. I am also incredibly proud. My best, Randall Dunn Head of School 2
