News & Notes FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF UPTOWN PARTNERSHIP: Our commitment deepens Authentic community engagement is an essential part of Latin. From Latin's foundational support of the High Jump program, to the 22-year partnership with the McCutcheon School, to our annual MLK day presence at the Uptown Baptist Soup Kitchen, relationships with these organizations have provided students with meaningful learning opportunities for years. e Uptown Partnership was established in 2012 in an eort to build more mutually benecial relationships. Uptown is one of the most diverse communities in Chicago in terms of culture, race, age, citizenship, artistic heritage and economic status. e partnership provides opportunities for teachers, students and parents in all divisions to move beyond community service and closer to a model of true community engagement. In the past ve years, collaborations have ranged from book shares and poetry slams, to designing clay tiles and learning to dance. Under the direction of Sarah Bunger, director of the Uptown Partnership, Latin's commitment was further solidied by securing a storefront space in the neighborhood in March 2017. e location, on the corner of Argyle St. and Sheridan Rd., is ideal for making programming accessible to Latin's educational and non-prot partners in the area. e rst ocial event in the Uptown space was a middle school hack-a-thon in May 2017, attended by students from Latin, Goudy, McCutcheon and Courtenay schools. Last summer, the space was used for academic camps. On an ongoing basis, the space will be used twice a month by the Illinois State's Attorney's oce as a Community Justice Center providing free legal services to walk-in clients. e Chinese Mutual Aid Association will also host ESL classes four afternoons per week. Future plans include SAT and ACT tutoring programs for Uptown residents, an urban design class, community yoga and more. We want everyday life at Latin to include meaningful connections to the outside world through which students learn, enhance their empathy and develop a foundation for future civic engagement." – Latin's Strategic Plan Some recent curricular engagements with Uptown: • Upper school Dance Mentoring Project class • ird grade neighborhood study of Uptown and architecture art project with Courtenay School • Fourth grade Hugo art, reading and movie partnership • Middle school hack-a-thon • Tenth grade community engagement class • Senn High School/ Latin visual storytelling Project Week • Design inking in Uptown Project Week News & Notes Do You Know?
