Remembering the Past and Looking Forward "You have left Latin a better place and will be sorely missed," Upper School Director Ted Graf told members of the Class of 2011 at their graduation on June 9. Speaking to a large audience of parents, grandparents, alumni and friends, Graf described the graduating seniors as a group that showed "inspiring leadership, a fierce intellect, loyalty, thoughtfulness, humor and unbridled curiosity." By working together, Graf said, members of the class experienced great successes whether it was in the classroom, on the athletic field, or a fundraising effort for earthquake survivors in Japan. Student speaker Shelby Brody, a "lifer," spoke about the many small, seemingly insignificant moments during her 14 years at Latin that have had an impact on her life. Shelby recalled crying on her first day of junior kindergarten because the other female Yellow Bears "had sparkly shoes and I did not." Now, Shelby said, she was once again close to tears contemplating saying goodbye to the school that has become her family and her home. "But if I've learned anything at Latin, it is this: There is so much more to life than sparkly shoes," she said. Faculty speaker Jeff Windus took a more serious tone, lauding the members of the Class of 2011 for their many achievements, but cautioning them that the "real hard work lies before you." He called on the graduates to make good choices as they embark on the next phase of their lives. "Choose to be decent. Choose to be selfless. Choose to be courageous. Choose to be heroic," Windus urged. l Members of the Class of 2011 bid a fond farewell to Latin. Latin School of Chicago 5
