Art teacher Betty Lark Ross working with Jack Mulopulos '13 on his autobiographical film. "The creation of an autobiographical film "They not only learn about them- selves and their peers; they also learn to effectively communicate by creating a film that's a window into their world." – Betty Lark Ross By the time upper schoolers choose to take Betty Lark Ross's digital video production elective, they've spent a fair amount of time figuring out who they are. The lessons they have been learning from those first days in junior kindergarten inform the autobiographical film that is the first assignment of the class. The objective of the "About Me" video assignment is twofold: Students must "grapple with questions of their own identity" while mastering the technical and creative skills necessary for filmmaking, said Ross. reveals self-reflection, as students are expected to focus on topics of significant personal interest," Ross said. Watching the films provides classmates uncommon insight into one another's lives and lays the groundwork for future video work. "I learn a great deal about my students," said Ross. "What they love, admire and believe. And they not only learn about themselves and their peers; they also learn to effectively communicate by creating a film that's a window into their world." Through their imaginative instruction, teachers in the lower, middle and upper schools are providing Latin students with the tools they need to explore some of life's most fundamental questions: Who am I? And where do I come from? The answers – like the bond that often forms between students and teachers – can be profound. l – Jessica Reaves 34 Latin Magazine
