Upper School Awards The Mabel Slade Vickery Award Jake Milner Mabel Slade Vickery founded Latin School and served as its first headmistress from 1888 to 1929. e Alumni Association awards this prize to the senior class member who has the highest academic average during the four upper school years. The John MacDougall Graham Award Anastasiya Varenytsya John MacDougall Graham served as headmaster of Latin School from 1960 to 1969 and also taught history. Each year, the Alumni Association gives this award to the member of the junior class who best demonstrates the qualities of citizenship, leadership and loyalty. The Robert Peck Bates Memorial Award Sarah Margulis Robert Peck Bates was Latin School's first headmaster, serving from 1894 to 1926. e award is presented to the student in the senior class who has most improved academically from the junior to the senior year. The David Eaton Award Enton Lam e Alumni Association established this award in 1983 in honor of David Eaton, former dean and upper school head, to recognize "that member of the graduating class who in four years has exemplified the qualities of loyalty, exuberance and generosity of spirit, and whose presence in our midst is an enduring gift to the Latin School of Chicago." The Dorothy Hammett Prize Madeline Cohen Dorothy Hammett taught middle school English from 1916 to 1953 and then became secretary of the Alumni Association. e Alumni Association presents this award "to that senior, elected by the senior class, who has shown the most devotion to Latin School and has demonstrated this through unselfish service to the school." Gregory Leith Stark '43 Award Kathryn Stender & Sargon Yousef Gregory Leith Stark '43 (1924-1945) was a self-effacing, friendly and dedicated student who attended Latin for 13 years. After graduating in 1943, he chose to serve his country with a sense of gratitude and duty, knowing that the truly courageous individual can overcome his deepest fears and carry on with honor. Gregory was killed in combat during World War II, and it was his unselfish willingness to serve that has given the rest of us more time to make a better world. e Gregory Leith Stark Award is presented to a member of the senior class who through his or her unselfish behavior, friendliness and courage has made Latin School a better place for all of its students. The Karen Sue Berger Community Service Award (student) Alden Sulger & Salman Jaffer The Karen Sue Berger Community Service Award (faculty) Brenda Van Halsema Friedman Karen Sue Berger was a kindergarten student at Latin School who died of cystic fibrosis in 1965. is award is presented in her memory by the Sally and Miles Berger Family Foundation to a student (or students) and faculty member in recognition of their outstanding contributions in community service. The Richard Dolezal Award in Humanities Julia Rose Atkinson e award was established in 2000 by the Marshall B. Front Family Charitable Foundation, Laura De Ferrari and Marshall B. Front to honor Richard R. Dolezal for his scholarship, dedicated teaching and devotion to his students. Presented annually to a member of the senior class who has demonstrated excellence in the study of humanities. The Kelly McKinnell Memorial Award for Excellence in Photography Connor Kaniewski & Hunter Morgan Kelly McKinnell, who graduated in 1995 and later became a photography instructor for the Live & Learn program, loved Latin School and loved photography. When she unexpectedly passed away in 2003, her classmates, friends and co-workers endowed a photography award in her name. e Kelly McKinnell Award for Excellence in Photography is presented annually to a graduating senior who shows a passion and talent for photography, a unique and creative eye for capturing a scene, and a willingness to explore new techniques available with new technology. The Alumni Cup Award Emma Beier Established by the Alumni Association, this award recognizes a student in the freshman class who has demonstrated outstanding academic accomplishments, intellectual curiosity and love of learning. 2016-17 AWARDS Around School News & Notes Around School 6
