Words from the Head Words from the Head Dear Latin Community, In 2008, Middle School Director Deb Sampey invited her faculty members to read Mindset: e New Psychology of Success over the summer. Sampey was inspired after hearing the author, psychologist and motivation researcher Carol Dweck, speak at a conference. At that time, the faculty began integrating the thinking into their teaching approach. Almost 10 years later, Dweck's book has morphed into a movement in education, and there is a significant body of academic and brain research on growth mindset. is winter, Latin dove deeper into this work by inviting Eduardo Briceño, co-founder with Dweck and CEO of Mindset Works, to Latin to speak with students, faculty and parents as a way of moving our entire community along the spectrum from fixed to growth. "In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work – brains and talent are just the starting point. is view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment," writes Dweck. Growth mindset is among the critical habits of mind, along with lifelong learning and intrinsic motivation Latin strives to develop in students as a means of preparing them for life beyond North and Clark. Look no further than our alumni for proof of our success. e three featured here (See article on page 36) have demonstrated that they are willing to take on challenges, understand that success takes effort, and view failures as opportunities – all hallmarks of a growth mindset. e best news about growth mindset is that you are never too old to change your ways. Is there something in your life you have decided you're not good at? If so, take a cue from Latin fourth graders and instead say, "I'm not good at that…yet."
