Class Notes Roman Connections 1938 Mary McBirney Ryerson Brown died July 10, 2016. Mary left Latin for high school and graduated from St. Timothy's School and attended the University of Chicago. She was a fiercely loyal friend and a beloved pillar of her family. Mary lived a generous and energetic life and donated her time at numerous community organizations, including the United Way and the first American hospice. She devoted countless hours to her church, first as the head of the altar guild at Trinity Episcopal in Southport, CT, and later, at Bethesda-By-e-Sea in Palm Beach, FL. 1940 Frances Amberg Spence passed away on June 18, 2015 following a brief illness. She often shared fond memories of her time at Girls Latin and was very active in St. Chrysostom's Church before moving to Washington, D.C. She retired to Florida, where she enjoyed spending time with family and her grandchildren. 1943 Burton Horwitch died at his Los Angeles home on June 18, 2015. After serving with the Army Air Corps during World War II, Burton returned to Chicago and joined his father in 1946 to start Albert Inc., an intimate-apparel company that was later renamed Deena Lingerie, and eventually moved the production facilities to California. In 1961, he was an investor in the California Mart, the first large-scale structure for apparel showrooms (now called the California Market Center). He also helped create Kellwood Co., a major clothing company that is still in operation today. In the late '80s and early '90s, Burton saw the value of technology as a business advantage and created DeenaTech, a beta partner for companies such as IBM, Gerber, Lectra and Manhattan Associates. Burton's active role in the community included being on the board of directors at the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, City of Hope and Stop Cancer as well as serving on the board of directors at City National Bank, Adat Ariel Temple and Hillcrest Country Club. 1947 REUNION YEAR Marianne McDonald Wellesley died on May 21, 2016 surrounded by her family. She made her home in England, where she and her husband of 63 years, Robin, raised their three children. 1948 Harry Stern Gerald Grant, Jr. died unexpectedly on April 17, 2016 at his home in Fort Worth, TX. After graduating from Latin, Gerry attended Brown University, where he wrote for the Brown Daily Herald and played in the band. He served in the infantry in the Korean War and earned a B.A. and M.B.A. at Northwestern University. Gerry spent the next 25 years in the packaging business at St. Regis Paper Company and Stone Container Corporation. In 1977, he decided the travel was Have a new job? Recently married?
