Stone: INSPIRATION "There are several 3D printers in the school, but the Replicator 2 is the workhorse. It can print large objects relatively quickly and puts on a sound and light show as it works. Seeing the Replicator 2 in action is usually what first draws kids into the room." Stone: VERSATILITY "One of my favorite tools is the vinyl cutter because of the wide range of projects you can create – from decals and stickers to heat transfer patches for clothing. These bird decals were a solution sixth grade science students came up with to reduce bird-window collisions. They learned how to draw the silhouettes in art and then stuck them on windows around school." Stone: CREATIVITY "We made the snowman using Tinkercad, a website for students to explore their interests and create their own 3D designs. It makes 3D modeling accessible, colorful and fun and is a good way to get kids started in this space." Oommen: ALGORITHMS "This project illustrates that computer science is much more than sitting in front of a computer and programing. A lot of it actually is about creating or following an algorithm to accomplish something. The kids wore their origami pig necklaces, which prompted people to ask: 'Why did you make a pig in CS?' The answer: 'We followed an algorithm.'" Oommen: ROBOTICS "The students have a lot of fun with the Eddison Bot. It introduces them to robots and the realization that having learned about algorithms and binary communication, they can now program a robot to follow instructions." 29 Latin Magazine » Spring 2016
