around school 8 Around School JK All Day After much discussion about the evolving needs of our students and families, Latin School will transition to a full-day junior kindergarten program for the first time beginning in the fall of 2015. is decision was made largely based on the success of JK Etc., which was launched two years ago to provide an option for the growing number of families who wanted to supplement junior kindergarten with additional hours of play and learning. By 2014, nearly 100 percent of junior kindergarten students were enrolled in JK Etc., with an overwhelmingly positive response from children, parents and teachers to the longer day. In reviewing the research on full-day preschool programs, the school learned that children in these programs make significant progress in the areas of language, literacy and math due to having more opportunities to practice new skills. ey also take advantage of more opportunities to participate in student-driven exploration, while teachers have more time to devote the morning – when children of this age do their best learning – to skills development. While a full-day JK is a major change for Latin, in many ways the student experience will remain the same. Our JKers will continue to be in a classroom with a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, where the curriculum is play-based and where they can grow into confident and successful learners supported by a devoted faculty. Latin's youngest students now will enjoy more hours of learning and play. Latin and Social Media Now it's easier than ever to stay in touch with what is happening at Latin.
