latin magazine » spring 2015 39 1968 continued: A note from richard Mcclory: "I normally don't reply to requests for updated bio information, but having reached that age where one walks into a room for a purpose that he can't remember, forcing him to return to his starting point to recollect his reason for making the trip, I will attempt to give a summary of what I've done since graduating close to the bottom of the Class of '68. "I barely graduated from the University of Dallas in '72 with a B.A. in history that opened no doors. ough majoring in history, my minor was getting drunk, and I continued those studies for another 10 years. By God's miracle or from the natural result of a decade cycle of drinking and hangovers, I developed a form of epilepsy that is controlled by daily doses of medication. I spent most of the 70s scheduling assembly lines at a plumbing supply factory in Dallas. Every time you flush your toilet, you can think of me. As glamorous as plumbing can be, it wasn't enough. I changed careers and became an actor. Interesting, fun, but only one in a million make it. I'm not that one. "A friend persuaded me to attend an alumni gathering at UD in the early 80s. ere I saw a girl from my class of '72. We fell in love at second sight, and I moved to Austin, where she already owned a home. We married in '84. I got a beautiful wife, a house, and a ready-made family of four stepchildren, to which we added two more. I've worked at low-skilled jobs from cashiers at sporting goods and video rental stores to Motorola/Freescale graveyard shifts testing semiconductors. I even had my own Santa Claus business for a while, but people only wanted to hire me in December. "I still live in Austin, which is kind of like a piece of California that's been put in the middle of Texas. I'm still married, have four grandchildren, and my wife and I have lived in this house for over 30 years. It's nothing fancy. I haven't written any books or poems, don't play any instruments, but I do sing in the shower. I'm a lucky man' and I'm a happy man. I hope that my '68 classmates are happy, too. "Now, why did I come in here and why am I writing this letter?" rod Mcnealy writes: "I am one of the Latin 'lower school' folks. Realize that I was at Latin longer than any other school – kindergarten through sixth grade, with one year off at Sacred Heart on Sheridan Road. While I missed the last reunion, the 40th was super, thanks to chuck Freilich's great detective work tracking down our disparate members – even some men had changed their names! "My wife Patty and I are 'tri-coastal.' We live part time in New Jersey, our home since 1978. We also live part time in Sherwood, OR – yes, the local high school teams are called the "Bow-men, Bow-women"! Our daughter, her husband and our two grandsons live nearby in Newberg, OR. Our youngest daughter Rebecca, maintains our Chicago roots, and teaches and lives in Evanston. So we are on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Lake Michigan. "Clearly, our two grandchildren are our focus. Emmett just turned 3, and Jonathan is a climbing 8 months. We are out in Oregon for weeks at a time and spend most days with Mary and her family. Emmett loves omas the Train, and his younger brother loves anything Emmett does! Always think of those big steam engines at Chicago's iconic Science and Industry Museum and how we would crawl all over them. "Another personal interest for me has been Ancestry.com. Upon my mother's death, I inherited her extensive family photography collection. is included some albums from my grandmother. We had never seen much of this collection before. So, trying to figure out who is who, as many photos have no captions. Encourage classmates who are interested to try some genealogy for the fun of it. Never know what you will find! Please send my love to all classmates – what wonderful memories!" alF PerSSon sends a shout-out from Sweden: "Hello from overseas! My news is that I have become a happy grandfather for the first time." deB SchauB writes: "At the end of January 2015, I went to Nicaragua on a mission trip with my church to prime and paint silos as well as dig for water with a well that Way of e Cross Missionaries had bought. We were there eight days and it was hot! We only reached 100 feet and no water, so… more research on their part. I teach about 10 classes a week at Cadence Fitness Center, now part of Northwestern Medicine. I also teach ChiRunning/Walking on my own and just became a senior instructor." Michele waGner Stone chimes in from sunny Florida: "We are all well in Miami. Robert still works full time; however, we are able to travel when we want. I spend time taking classes, volunteering with Zoe, our dog, at our Miami children's hospital, and helping with grandchildren. Our son and wife, Jeffrey and Tamara, and their two cats live five minutes away. Our other son and wife, Michael and Janine, and three grandsons, Jacob (13), Maxwell (10) and Samson (4) live 15 minutes away. All are a major part of our lives. We are fortunate to have a second home in Colorado. Mary wolBach loPert comes to visit every summer. If anyone comes to Miami or Vail ... we would love to see you. Best to all." e second issue of liSe weil's online journal is now available. Learn more in Marketplace. Class Notes 39 latin magazine » spring 2015
