39 L AT I N S C H O O L O F C H I C A G O 1959 Rebecca Ericsson Hunter, Richard Van Mell Cynthia Weingartner Bardes writes: "I graduated from Chicago Latin School and went on to Sarah Lawrence College, where I received a B.A. After graduation I moved to New York for a brief period and then married and moved to Seattle. In Seattle, I worked at Yesler Terrace Neighborhood House as a Group Worker assisting 900 families. Two years later, my family and I moved to San Francisco, where I became an assistant director of the Chinatown YWCA. ere I counseled members of Chinese street gangs and ran a tutorial program for China-born and American-born children who could not speak English. In the late 1980s on a trip to the south of France, I discovered the most wonderful silk crepe de Chine fabrics, screened from paintings by a French artist, woven and printed in Milan, Italy. ese beautiful silks inspired me to design dresses that were sold at Henri Bendel, Saks Fifth Avenue, I. Magnin and more than 100 boutiques nationally. I designed dresses for more than 12 years. My career in fashion involved a lot of business travel, which eventually became tiresome. I then opened an interior design business in Vero Beach, FL. In 2009, while recovering from surgery after a car accident, I decided to try writing. My first effort, a children's picture book for ages 3-7 called Pansy at the Palace, was published in November 2012. It was followed by a second, Pansy in Paris, and will soon be joined by a third, Pansy in Venice. My husband, David, and I live most of the year in Vero Beach but spend three months every fall in Los Angeles to be near our daughter Aubrey and her family. My granddaughter, Avery, is the inspiration for Pansy's sidekick in the series – and of course, Pansy is based on my own beloved chocolate toy poodle." Looking forward to our 55th in 2019! Kevin Cooke notes: "A new job? Recently married? Written a book? ese questions come up every year in the Latin Magazine. Well, no to the first two, but as it happens, I have written a book. It's a memoir of my mother, Dr. Pauline Cooke. She came from an old Chicago family, the Porters, and was a great believer in the Latin School. Being a psychiatrist in what was a male dominated field in her time made her something of a feminist pioneer, but I doubt she would have described herself as such. John graduated from Latin School, having finished his senior year living with the headmaster. John was a joker, easy talker and possessed a unique ability to hold an audience with a story. He was also an artful listener. We extend our condolences to his wife, Beth Harte; his son, J.R. As a transplant recipient (nine years), it was thrilling to meet some of the top surgeons, nephrologists and researchers in the field at the Moscone Center, San Francisco." 1972 Gail Sonnenfeld produced the documentary Algren, which was selected for the Chicago International Film Festival this fall. See more in Marketplace. Welcome home, Peter Zwack! After a terrific 35-year career in the Army, Peter has returned to the U.S. in anticipation of retiring in January. Most recently, Peter was the senior defense official and defense attache in Moscow, representing the secretary of defense, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the commanding general, European Command, for coordination and security matters for all U.S. non-combatant command elements in the Russian Federation.
