; ; 13 Interesting facts you might not know about Carol Spreitzer: l Her association with the Latin School isn't just long, it's multi-generational. Her son started at Latin in 1981, and her second grandchild is going through the junior kindergarten admissions process this fall. l She has served the school in many capacities, including as parent volunteer, mail/copy center supervisor and most recently as associate director of admissions. l Her baked treats might be what she is most popular for among faculty and staff at Latin. Spreitzer explains, "I love to bake because I love to eat." l To Spreitzer, the most important way she could serve the school in the Admissions Office was to be an ambassador for Latin, "creating awareness of the school" and correcting some misperceptions. "It's so important, because people who aren't familiar with the school don't really understand what Latin is all about." l Never one to sit still, Spreitzer has already embarked on her next endeavor. She recently opened a custom furniture boutique in New Buffalo, MI, with her nephew. Interesting facts you might not know about Chuck Sebastian: l Some of the most rewarding moments during his three decades as a physical education teacher in the lower school were when he watched children take on seemingly insurmountable challenges. "When you see a student accomplish a physical task for the first time – the first time they're able to do a cartwheel or scale a vertical wall – and you see the joy in their face, that is the ultimate goal of the PE curriculum," Sebastian said. "You hope the next time they're faced with a challenge, they can say to themselves: 'Hey, I climbed that wall. I can do this.'" l Sebastian is an avid triathlete. l In retirement, he plans to continue his long-running volunteer work with two groups: International Relief, an organization that rebuilds homes devastated by natural disasters, and Honor Flight Chicago, which takes World War II veterans for trips to Washington, D.C. l Although usually quiet about expressing his feelings, Sebastian can't say enough about his colleagues: "For 30 years they were my colleagues and friends. But most of all, they were my heroes." Carol Spreitzer associate director of admissions "I think about all of the little things Carol did that many people never knew. If you had a hardship in your family, she was there. If she saw a colleague frayed at the edges with responsibilities at work and home, she was there. There was no job too menial, no volunteer role unfilled." – Shelley Greenwood, interim lower school director and assistant head of school for advancement "Chuck dedicated himself to community service in and outside the classroom. He chose not to speak about his many hours, days, weeks and months of personal time spent in the service of others. I do know, however, that those have been among the most meaningful experiences of his life." – Jan Wilson, retired lower school physical education director YEARS OF SERVICE YEARS OF SERVICE Chuck Sebastian lower school physical education teacher LATIN SCHOOL OF CHICAGO Latin's Remarkable Retirees of 2014
