Latin's Photography Club stormed the 2013-2014 year much like the polar vortex stormed Chicago this winter. With a handful of new members, as well as our returning photographers, we improved our basic skills as well as opened up many new doors not yet explored. Starting the year with a club favorite was our long-exposure photography shoot in the dark room. We crammed into the tiny room, closed the doors and sealed the windows so no light could enter. There, we worked with timed shutter speeds to create fascinating light drawing effects with LED's and flashlights. While the sun was still shinning, we took to the streets with chalk, outlining shadows in vibrant colors, bringing the shade to life. Teaming up with The Street, Latin's fashion club, we learned about portrait photography and how controlled lighting can enhance our images. For one unique project we shot miniature toy people (only centimeters tall) in bizarre situations, such as wading through a banana or riding monstrous toy cattle. Inspired by the work of Photographer Zeke Berman, we spent a clubs block fabricating the arrangement of objects for the camera, inciting our imagination and challenging our perception. A club tradition is the scavenger hunt where members pair up and photograph objects that loosely match riddled questions. The most creative and photographically impressive team won a box of strawberry Pop-Tarts at the end of the hunt for their photo depicting "a box of sox." We even spent one clubs block dropping objects into large tanks of water, capturing the crisp splashes and the objects soaked in bubbles. The highlight of the year was our visit with photojournalist Steve Shapiro who emphasized the power of storytelling and emotional impact in documentary photography. With so many talented photographers, this edition of VIDI gives us only a glimpse into the amazing work that has been accomplished this year. It's been a fun year. Hope you enjoy.
