4 L AT I N M A G A Z I N E LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Latin Community, A milestone, by definition, is recognition of a point in time, a stage of development, a change in progress. It is a way to mark a distance, but with the understanding that it will be surpassed – that there are more to come in the future. Like a mile marker on the side of the road, our 125th year is another point in our journey as a school and a community of learners. And if our history is the road already traveled, then our new strategic plan helps us envision what lies ahead. We have defined what it is important to us now and what needs to be important if we are truly to continue to be an excellent school. Literally, our priorities are in order: academic excellence, wellness, community engagement and inclusivity. Our work around these topics will be what not only ensures Latin's strength as a school, but what prepares our students for purposeful lives beyond our walls. e best proof of our success is – and will continue to be – our stories. As Maya Angelou said, "Words mean more than what is put down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning." e voices shared here – from teachers, students and alumni – are uniquely Latin. Regardless of what our official planning documents say, these stories are what makes our work real and meaningful, and they are what will live on long after the last of the written plans are old and faded. We don't know exactly what changes and challenges we will encounter on our future path. But we will pursue it as we have for 125 years ... with curiosity, integrity, an authentic Chicago spirit and lots of Latin pride. Onward, Randall Dunn Head of School H E A D O F S C H O O L
