UP FRONT Letter from the Head of School Dear Latin Family, "One of the best things of which a school can boast is a strong school spirit […] it means more than rooting loudly for the victorious team on the gridiron, or supporting with good wishes the advancement of any school cause. Real school spirit should cause [each student] to take pride in his school and to desire its superiority to other schools in every way." – Sigillum, 1902 In 1902, Latin was just 14 years old, but based on this note in the yearbook, students understood that school spirit was essential to a strong school. One hundred eleven years later, I would argue the same. But, in order to be truly proud of who we are, we need to know who we are. To that end, I am pleased to share as the feature of this commemorative issue of Latin Magazine, the most comprehensive history of our school ever put to paper. In addition to being a consecutive recounting of the past 125 years, the collection of personal memories included provides an intimate account of the people and events that make up our shared story. Through these heartfelt recollections, grainy, but powerful photos and archival documents we are able to see our community's growth and evolution in the context of the city and world around us since 1888. We can also see that a few constants – outstanding faculty and staff, authentic student/teacher relationships, a collaborative partnership with parents and a strong sense of community – have all been a part of Latin since Mabel Slade first stepped into Mrs. Blatchford's parlor. These qualities have not only driven our growth, but also allowed us to overcome the challenges that accompanied every new decade and era. It is certain; our path has not been easy. But with special Chicago-style grit, we have weathered almost every type of storm and come out stronger. It is an amazing piece of work that will serve as both a useful reference of where we've been and a touching reminder of why we've been here. Enjoy this history lesson, Romans. And be proud. All the best, Randall Dunn Head of School 2 L AT I N M AGAZINE
